Question

Answer

01

Yes

Autism is rising considerably and I feel there should be a Bill, as diagnosis in Wales is very hit and miss and needs of autistic children and adults are not being met on any level at the moment.

No

No

Our main pediatrician in Ceredigion admits his knowledge of autism is very limited. It takes a whole team of specialist to give an adequate diagnosis that is going to be helpful to meeting a child's/person's needs. We need a specialist unit if this is going to be done properly and efficiently. Our current doctors and therapists are just floundering at the moment, they are not specialist in autism. Not in my experience or anyone I have met in Wales anyway.

Not sure

Yes there needs to be a time scale, otherwise it can take years for a full diagnosis and the situation is so dire for parents and people with autism in Wales.

Other countries have whole teams that work with your child and do a full assessment, it does take time but it is the only way it can be done properly. When my son was diagnosed they had to get outside help as they said he was to complex to diagnose. This tells me the current people at least in Ceredigion cannot fully diagnose any child..I had therapist throwing all sorts of diagnosis at me some without even seeing my child and causing an enormous amount of stress to me as a parent. They need to be fully trained in what the profess to be able to do, it is critical to get the diagnosis right..not just guessing!

It was a Consultant Paediatric Neurologist who diagnosed my son..I am so grateful as before she was brought in I have several different diagnosis presented to me, all completely wrong and thankfully I did not follow their advice as I

Yes the school system is not catering for children with high functioning autism like my son. I am currently homeschooling my son as are many others in the are with children on the spectrum. This is not ideal in the perfect world he would be at school. It is the smallest upsetting unbelievable thing that stops my child going to school in Wales..he is noise sensitive and cannot bare people shouting..I have had to remove him from two schools. The reason..the teachers cannot teach without shouting! He can't bare is it scares him and gives him terrible anxiety. He desperately wants to be in school, but he will tell you himself, he has no choice as he cannot cope with teachers shouting and screaming. How sad is that! So training teachers maybe a thing to have high on your agenda, if you can. As I cannot find a school in Ceredigion where the teach without shouting, most parents are mortified by this and all believe it should change. My son cannot go to secondary school either as they shout there, so I have decided to homes school him, but as this is my choice I am not entitled to any help towards his education whatsoever..hardly seems fair does it when the schools cannot cater for my sons basic needs of feeling secure and happy.

It should happen all the time.

Well anything has to be better than what we have now..I cannot see how it can be worse here in Wales.
